Walking down the history lane

Let’s take a brief tour of the 99 Speedmart® supply chain and see how it has grown and how it is geared towards greater future growth.

1987

The seed of 99 Speedmart® is sown in the form of a traditional “mom and pop” sundry mart called Pasar Raya Hiap Hoe by Mr. Lee Thiam Wah in Tepi Sungai Klang.

This humble beginning has enabled Mr. Lee to gain first hand knowledge and insight into the sundry retail market through personal interaction with customers and suppliers.

1992

The very first store that bears the name ‘99’ opens in Klang Utama.

This store, Pasar Mini 99, represents the very first step Mr. Lee takes to realize his vision to build an integrated chain of mini-marts. The number ‘99’, symbolising longevity and continuity in Chinese is the underpinning philosophy behind his vision.

1992 – 1998

With sheer dedication and hard work, Mr. Lee expands Pasar Mini 99 to eight other outlets in Klang ala chain store format.

2000

Amidst the growing popularity of the Pasar Mini 99, the 99 Speedmart® name is launched with the opening of a new store at Batu Belah, Klang.

Behind its modest launch, 99 Speedmart® has an intensive expansion strategy at work that is geared to help the chain increase market penetration and share.

It represents more than just a rebranding exercise. It also entails the introduction of a fresh approach in interior as well as exterior set-up to enhance the visibility of the shop and the comfort of shopping.

2002

To meet the logistics demands of the rapidly expanding chain of 99 Speedmart® outlets, a new distribution centre was conceived in the year 2002, and completed in October 2002 at a cost of RM6.5 million. This warehouse is an 80,000 square feet facility complete with centralized stacking, storage and warehousing capabilities.

2003

Within 2 years, efforts in refining the 99 Speedmart® concept produced encouraging results from increasing customer traffic volume and new store openings. This breakthrough convinced Mr. Lee that a new super chain of 99 Speedmart® mini markets was ready to take-off. Thus, all the Pasar Mini 99 stores are rebranded as 99 Speedmart®.

2006

99 Speedmart® receives its first Consumer Choice Award from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Malaysia. This milestone marking award is evidence for 99 Speedmart®’s success in winning customers’ hearts and minds.

2007 – 2008

The second distribution centre was conceived in late 2007, and completed in July 2008. It was designed to enable the chain to stay in touch with on-going plans to expand its network of mini markets nationwide to reach out to more customers while continuously introducing new and innovative products and services.

2008

On 1th November 2008, 99 Speedmart® launches its 100th outlet in Pinggiran Batu Caves.

2009

While enjoying a year of healthy and steady growth, 99 Speedmart® is planning its 3rd distribution centre in Balakong. It is expected to operate in 2011.

2010

99 Speedmart®'s 200th outlet in Bandar Baru Selayang, Batu Caves is opened on 27th, June. A new administrative building is also in the planning stage.

2011

As planned during 2009. Finally, our 3rd warehouse locate at Balakong Jaya been successfully start operate on 14 October 2011.

 

At the year end of December 2011, together we celebrate at the same day of Christmas Day (25 December 2011) with our 300th outlet open at Banting Sg Emas
